Never let it be said that nothing happens in Taiwan. Typhoon Parma and Typhoon Melor have been churning across the Pacific the past few days. Parma already slammed the Philippines; now it’s headed for Taiwan.
The winds whipped and howled and trees flailed across Hsinchu today. Sagging gray clouds rolled in. The falling barometric pressure electrified the air. I felt jittery and my head hurt. At the weekend market in Hsinchu Park, I actually felt cold for the first time since we’ve been on the island.
The looming weather has spurred the evacuation of 1,000 villagers in southern Taiwan—a region devastated by deadly Typhoon Morakot in August.
And just in case we weren’t on high enough alert? Our first Taiwanese earthquake, magnitude 6.1, 1:36 am.
